that sudden lurch you got from automatics was usually a downshift
with carbuerated vehicles, you not only had a downshift cable
that engaged, but if you had a 4 barrel carb, the back 2 jets would open up and dump in more gas giving you a real oomph
in my years of driving various automatics
upshifting has pretty much been smooth
in fact there's a vacuum modulator valve which we used to replace
with one that had more adjustment to get stronger shifts
with these newer vehicles you have to reprogram them to change the shift points........
